Sir Madam Salon creates unique opportunities for people to build unexpected connections through hairdressing.
We are a social change hairdressing group, working across remote Australia and festivals. Sir Madam Salon is a collaboration between hairdresser Mel Balkan, live artist Ben Fox and cultural strategist Kate Fielding.
I’m excited to share the news that we will be appearing at the inaugural Broken Heel Festival in Broken Hill in September 2015. For this event Sir Madam Salon will present a pop-up hair salon interactive performance. For three days we invite people to come along to enjoy styling each other’s hair and be part of the salon chatter about fashion, art, culture, gender and remote Australia.
The Broken Heel Festival celebrates the 21st birthday of the classic Australian film Priscilla Queen of the Desert. It promises that it is “programmed to give Priscilla the Birthday Bash every 21 year old deserves (including the awkward family photos & speeches). Over 3 days you can expect a handbag stuffed full of stunning Drag Queens & Drag Kings from around the nation delivering their finest performances as they pay homage to a movie that changed their lives.”
Sir Madam Salon is presented at Broken Hill in partnership with Maari Ma Aboriginal Health with support from the WA Department of Culture and the Arts.
